In this paper, Geoff Thompson addresses the now common appeal to the inclusion of the Gentiles into the early Christian communities as a significant biblical paradigm for our contemporary theological reflections about the inclusion of gay people (and by implication LGBTI people more generally) into the church. The argument is often presented like this: the inclusion of the Gentiles is a paradigm of the church accepting, on the basis of their evidence of the Spiritƒ??s work, those who have previously been deemed outsiders. Instead, Thompsonƒ??s argument is that the ancient inclusion of the spirit-filled Gentiles was based on readings of Old Testament texts in ways nobody had ever thought possible. His claim is that the presence of spirit-filled gay people in the church can prompt the church to read Scripture in ways that nobody had previously thought possible but which are consistent with faithful readings of Scripture.
